Cinsault
Dry Creek Valley, Certified Organic
2006, Sold Out
Cinsault used to be my mystery grape. When we bought the old Bell Ranch,
named after one of the
Dry Creek Valley pioneer families, we found amongst the prune trees
a small patch of old-time Zinfandel surrounding a few hundred vines
of
a different type. Queries to the local growers returned the misnomer
“Malvasia”, the grapes didn’t serve our interest
at that time in
deeply colored and dramatically flavored wines (subtlety came later),
we figured it was a grafting mistake, and wrote it off as a block to
be
replanted.
Some years later we had our “eureka moment” while researching
Rhone varities. We learned that our “Malvasia” was actually
Malvoisie,
and established southern Rhone Valley grape better known as Cinsault.
Its description fit our
recollection of the soft, juicy, lightly earth wine with a rich palate
that we had made with the mystery grape some years earlier. Subtlety
had since entered our wine lexicon, we decided to replant it, and this
time called it Cinsault.
