Mourvèdre
Dry Creek Valley, Certified Organic
2005, Sold Out

Mourvèdre is a fitting cousin to, and willing blender with Syrah, sharing its robust texture and a similar tannin structure. As a 100% varietal it has an intriguing black cherry,
herbal, and cinamon flavor with a peppery, leathery finish. We sometimes compare
Mourvèdre with a French Burgundy for its suggestions of barnyard. Ours is a full bodied,
richly textured wine.

Mourvèdre is one of the lost varietals of California. Often known by its Spanish
name “Mataro”, it was used in the late 1800s for blending and was popular during Prohibition amoung home winemakers. Subsequently its luster faded until its redicovery by the new wave of “Rhone Rangers”. We planted Mourvèdre to be a building block of our Rhone-style to which they contribute important fruit, spice, and texture. Our vines are sited on shallow clay soils that moderate its natural vigor and give us a balanced crop of fully matured fruit.

The combination of richness and soft finish suggest lighter meats, or most dishes
prepared with mediterranean herbs and garlic. We do a marinated loin of pork in the winery
Forno after baking bread, but you would be as successful in the home oven. Enjoy the
Mourvèdre while you cook, deglaze the drippings with some of the wine, open another
bottle to serve with dinner.
